Only the August Complex Fire, a series of blazes started by dry lightning that eventually converged into one massive wildfire last year, has burned more acres in California. The second-largest wildfire in state history charred another 5,717 acres from Monday night into Tuesday morning and now has scorched 487,764 acres overall, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Even as the Dixie Fire has ripped through thousands of acres of land, fire crews had a circle on the calendar as an estimate when they might have it fully contained.
